About

I. McKay DeVault received her associate of science degree in business administration from Walters State Community College in 2017, summa cum laude, and her bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee in 2019, summa cum laude. Following her undergraduate studies, McKay attended the University of Tennessee College of Law where she served as a research editor for the Tennessee Law Review and a staff editor for Transactions: The Tennessee Journal of Business Law. She received the Third Year Editor’s Award for the Tennessee Law Review, was recognized for her service with the UT Pro Bono Program, and received CALI Awards for the top grade in seven of her classes. She graduated summa cum laude in 2022 with a concentration in Advocacy and Dispute Resolution. She was a member of the Dean’s List for all eligible semesters and was named a member of the Order of the Coif following graduation.

Before joining Hodges, Doughty & Carson as an associate in 2023, McKay served a one-year appointment with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable United States District Judge Thomas A. Varlan. This experience was impactful on McKay’s practice as a civil litigator by allowing her to learn about the factors judges consider important when rendering decisions, thereby strengthening her advocacy skills in the representation of her clients. McKay is a member of the Hamilton Burnett American Inn of Court, the Knoxville Bar Association and the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association. She was featured in the “Hello My Name Is” column of the November 2024 Edition of DICTA.

An East Tennessee native, McKay enjoys spending time with her fiancé Hunter and their two dogs, boating on Douglas Lake, and golfing.
